Hunter Leveling Guide

Leveling a Hunter can be pretty confusing if you don’t know exactly what a wow Hunter can or should do.  In this guide I will explain some of the tricks of being a Hunter as well as some common rotations, builds, glyphs and stats to choose!

Wow Hunter Builds

Basics

I suggest for the purposes of leveling a Hunter, you select Beast Mastery as your wow hunter build primary spec.  It is perfect for questing and soloing those more difficult quests.  With Beast Mastery your pet gains all of the major abilities to do damage, hold threat/aggro, and survive.  While in the Beast Mastery spec, your main focus dump will be Kill Command.  It takes focus, however, generates more damage and more threat from your pet, allowing you to do more shots without the threat of pulling off the mob.

In any spec, your pet is what makes the hunter. It brings various buffs/abilities to boost your stats, damage, or survivability. It also will be the main “tank” to keep the mobs from hitting you, allowing you to shoot at range. Hunters are VERY weak in melee combat, so anything you can do to keep the mob away, the better off you will be.   You may want to look into a Survival Spec if you plan on running 5 mans more than quests.  The overall damage you will put out will be higher, and you won’t need a tanking pet with the survivability stats.  At lower levels you may want to bring a tanking pet with you into 5 mans to assist the main tank with aggro help.

While questing you will want to make sure all of your pets abilities are on auto cast as well as defensive.  If you are running any dungeon, make sure to turn the Growl ability off because it will pull the mob away from the main tank, and most likely kill your pet pretty quick!  You will always want to send your pet in to attack first to get a firm grip on aggro before you start attacking. Again, in 5 mans, allow the Main Tank to do this first, then send in your pet!  The control of your pet isn’t gained until level 10, so when questing up to that point, be careful of what you attack, you pet has a mind of its own!

Wow Hunter Guide Advanced skills

Now that I have discussed some of the pet basics, I will explain some of the more advanced parts of leveling a Beast Mastery Hunter.  The first trick is called Kiting.  This skill will be very useful leveling, as well as in future Raiding situations.  Kiting is a technique that is used  to force the mob to follow you around, without actually allowing it to get within melee distance.  To kite a mob you will want to gain aggro, drop a frost trap, use your concussive shot and scatter shot to keep it slowed and try to keep the mob within the frost trap area of effect.   While kiting, you will want to work on another Hunter signature move; the Jump Shot.  The jump shot is a great way to cast a shot, without slowing down your forward progress. To do this, you will need to run away from your mob by holding down both mouse buttons, jump, turn around 180 degrees in mid-air and fire an instant shot.  This skill takes lots and lots of practice!

Rotation

If you are in a standard fight and can use a standard rotation, then this is how it should go.  You will always want to use a Hunters Mark First, then cast Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot until your run out of focus, and then refill with Steady Shot. Occasionally you will want to cast a Cobra Shot instead of a Steady Shot to renew the Serpent Sting you have on the mob.  Remember if you are kiting a mob, you will want to use a Concussive/Scattered Shot as well.   Always make sure that your Serpent Sting is still on the mob, if not, reapply!   For multiple mobs, use your multishot and fire/snake trap abilities!

Stats

The Statistics you will want to focus on will primarily look like this:

  • agility
  • hit rating
  • crit rating
  • haste rating
  • mastery (at level 80)
  • attack power

If you want to reforge any gear to get better stats in something you lack, remember this!  You will want to take stats away from something towards the bottom and fill it in your needs towards the top.  Hit Rating is Very Very important, the more you miss, the more your pet misses, the less aggro your pet gets and the slower it dies!  Try to keep your Hit Rating appropriate for your level and make sure to improve it, if it is too low!  You can see your hit/miss chance in the Character screen (C) in game, under Ranged Statistics.  This number should be as close to 0% as you can get, for the mobs you are killing!

Glyphs

The basic Beast Mastery glyphs you will want to select are:

Prime glyphs

  • Glyph of Arcane Shot
  • Glyph of Steady Shot
  • Glyph of Kill Command

Major glyphs

  • Glyph of Mending
  • Glyph of Freezing Trap
  • Glyph of Misdirection

Minor glyphs

  • Glyph of Mend Pet
  • Glyph of Revive Pet
  • Glyph of Feign Death

Wow Hunter Talents

Talent Spec

Beast Mastery 31/7/3

Wow hunter talents beast mastery

This is a basic wow hunter build for a Beast Mastery Hunter.  It’s focus is on survivability, aggro generation, and some damage.  With any build, feel free to experiment and see what feels and works best for you!

In conclusion, Hunters are a wonderful class to play.  Practice Crowd Controlling (CC) mobs with your traps, practice advanced skills (Jump Shot/Kiting), and don’t be afraid to take on large mobs.  Always look for difficult quests to test your abilities, use your mend pet ability to keep your pet alive and just have fun!  Look for more tips in the future! I hope you have enjoyed this wow hunter guide, wow hunter talent tree, and your wow hunter build for leveling.
